Success

The word success originates from the Old French word succes, which itself comes from the Latin succedere, meaning to go under, advance, or follow after. The Latin form succedere combines sub- ‘under, up to’ and cedere ‘to go, yield, move’. In medieval use, success referred to “a result” or “an outcome” of a course of action, evolving through Old French into Middle English as success. By the 15th century, success was firmly used to denote the favorable outcome or attainment of a goal and began to carry the sense of prosperity and achievement seen in modern usage. The word shifted from a general result to a highly contemporary emphasis on accomplishment, milestones, and personal or organizational attainment, often framed within the context of merit, effort, and fortune. Over time, success also acquired idiomatic associations (sweet success, personal success, measure of success) and extended into various domains like business, education, and self-help discourse, reinforcing the idea that success is both a measurable outcome and a social construct tied to expectations and standards.
