Troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth’s atmosphere, extending from the surface up to about 8–15 kilometers (5–9 miles) depending on location. It contains most of the atmosphere’s mass and is where weather phenomena occur. The term comes from Greek tropo, meaning “turn” or “change,” and sphaira, meaning “ball” or “sphere.”
