Shetland is a sub-arcipelago of Scotland, lying northeast of the Orkney Islands. As a noun, it denotes either the chain of islands or the people from there. In modern use, it can also describe the distinctive Shetland dialect and, in horses, a type of pony breed associated with the isles. Pronunciation is often stressed on the first syllable.
