Sessile is an adjective describing an organism permanently attached to a surface or a structure that is stationary and non-motile. In biology it often refers to plants or animals that do not move from where they are rooted or fixed. The term can also be used metaphorically to describe things fixed in place or inactive. It contrasts with motile or sedentary.
