Ribosomes are small cellular structures made of RNA and protein that function as the site of protein synthesis. They read messenger RNA sequences and link amino acids together to form polypeptides, which then fold into functional proteins. Found in all living cells, they occur free in the cytoplasm or attached to membranes, and vary in size across species.
