Renin is a proteolytic enzyme produced by the kidneys that initiates the renin–angiotensin system, helping regulate blood pressure and electrolyte balance. It cleaves angiotensinogen to form angiotensin I, which is subsequently converted to the potent vasoconstrictor angiotensin II. The term also appears in biological contexts referring to this enzyme's function within physiology and pathophysiology.
