Pseudostratified is an adjective describing a single-layered epithelium that appears stratified due to nuclei being at different levels. Although the layer looks multi-tiered, every cell contacts the basement membrane. Common in respiratory passages, it often includes cilia and goblet cells. The term combines pseudo- (false) with stratified (layered).
