Phoenicians are the ancient Semitic-speaking traders who founded city-states along the Mediterranean coast, notably Tyre, Sidon, and Carthage. They are credited with early maritime navigation, widespread trade networks, and the spread of the alphabet. The term refers to people from Phoenicia, an ancient region corresponding roughly to modern Lebanon and parts of Syria and Israel.
