Phanerozoic is an adjective describing the current geological eon (beginning about 541 million years ago) characterized by abundant hard-shelled fossils and visible animal life. It denotes the interval from the appearance of widespread animal life to the present, in contrast to earlier Precambrian times. The term is used primarily in geology and paleontology when classifying the geologic time scale and the fossil record.
