The title refers to the Nibelung utawa a legendary guild of dwarves, and the work recounts the heroic saga of Siegfried, his murder, and the subsequent vengeance and tragedy. In scholarly use, it designates the epic text itself and, by extension, the body of medieval German heroic poetry.
