Lithosphere is the rigid outer layer of the Earth, comprising the crust and uppermost mantle. It behaves as a solid shell that rides atop the asthenosphere, broken into tectonic plates. In geology, it is contrasted with the more ductile asthenosphere beneath and the deeper mantle and core.
