Hokkien is a branch of Min Nan Chinese spoken by communities in Fujian, Taiwan, and overseas, notably in Singapore and Malaysia. It refers to both the language family and people who trace their roots to Fujian Province. In linguistic contexts it's used to distinguish this subgroup from Mandarin and other Chinese varieties.
