Glucagon is a peptide hormone produced by the pancreatic alpha cells that raises blood glucose levels by stimulating glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis in the liver. It is used clinically to treat severe hypoglycemia. The term combines gluc(o)- meaning sugar and -agon indicating a chemical agent or protein.
