Gigantopithecus is an extinct genus of very large, early ape that inhabited parts of Asia during the Pleistocene. It is known chiefly from fossil teeth and jaws, with evidence pointing to enormous body size and a herbivorous to omnivorous diet. The name combines Greek roots meaning “giant” and “ape.”
