Epimysium is a sheath that surrounds an entire muscle, separating it from surrounding muscles and enabling smooth movement. It is a dense layer of connective tissue that, together with the perimysium and endomysium, helps transmit force and support vascular and nerve entry to the muscle. The word designates the outermost muscular coating rather than its individual fibers.
