A clitellum is a thick, glandular band encircling the bodies of certain annelid worms (notably earthworms and leeches). It appears as a lighter or differently colored ring and secretes mucus during reproduction, forming a cocoon to encase eggs. The term is specialized scientific vocabulary used in biology and zoology.
