Chaparral is a dense, shrubby evergreen plant community typical of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, often with thorny shrubs and scattered trees. It also refers to the ecosystem itself and, by extension, to scrubland habitats found in arid to semi-arid regions. The term can describe both vegetation and the wildlife-rich landscapes where such flora dominates.
