Cardioid (noun) refers to a microphone or loudspeaker pick-up pattern that is most sensitive to sound coming from in front of it and reduces pickup from the sides and rear. In electronics and acoustics, it also describes a heart-shaped curve or diagram used to model directional sensitivity. The term is widely used in audio engineering and signal processing contexts.
