An atoll is a ring-shaped island formed from the remnants of a coral reef that grows around an extinct volcanic island. Over time, the volcano subsides, leaving a central lagoon surrounded by a coral-reef ring. The term also refers to such a reef-ring island as a geographical feature and in cuisine or metaphorical use to describe something ring-like or island-based.
